For teams in Santa Barbara and Ventura: see how our live Zoom sessions work for Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, and nearby.

Ventura County teams are often a few people in Thousand Oaks, Oxnard, or Ventura working with colleagues in other states. Flying everyone in for a team day is rarely on the table. A good hour on Zoom is.

Below is a 50-minute game plan you can run yourself. When you would rather not plan or host, the Virtual Office Shenanigans Game is a live-hosted hour with me, Scott Topper. You may know my voice from afternoons on K-LITE 101.7 FM.

  • Live on Zoom, joined from the office or from home
  • 60 minutes, weekdays 7am to 7pm Pacific
  • 10 to 50 people, and everyone gets a turn
  • $300 for up to 10 people, plus $25 per additional person

A 50-Minute Game Plan You Can Run Yourself

Plan for 6 to 16 people, everyone on their own camera. Run the three rounds in order: the first one gets everyone talking, which makes the next two easier.

Round 1: Get Everyone Talking (10 minutes)

  • Big Voice, Small Voice (4 minutes): everyone says “The quarterly report is attached” at the same time, first in a whisper, then normally, then like a stadium announcer. Then as a sports announcer, a nature documentary narrator, and a pirate. Nobody is singled out because everyone speaks at once.
  • Stretch and Name (6 minutes): go around by name. Each person does a stretch with a sound and the whole group copies it. Everyone leads once.

Round 2: Pass It Along (20 minutes)

  • Last Word, First Word (8 minutes): one person says a sentence about their week. The next person starts with the last word of that sentence. You have to hear the whole thing to play.
  • Repeat Before You Reply (12 minutes): in pairs in breakout rooms for six minutes, one person describes a small workday annoyance for a minute. The partner sums it up in one sentence before saying anything else. Swap, then come back and compare how often the first summary landed.

Round 3: Build Something Silly (15 minutes)

  • Yes, And Product (10 minutes): the group invents one product. Each person adds a feature starting with “yes, and.” After two rounds, try one round of “yes, but” and notice the energy drop.
  • Group Pitch (5 minutes): three volunteers pitch the product, one sentence each in rotation, for about a minute. No prep.

Wrap (5 minutes)

Ask one question, out loud or in chat: “Where in our real week does ‘yes, but’ happen?”

If some of your people are camera-shy, our guide on how to get a shy team to participate virtually has more ideas.

Built for How Ventura County Teams Work

  • Biotech and life sciences in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and the Conejo Valley, where research, quality, and commercial groups rarely share a room
  • Agriculture and food teams in Oxnard and Camarillo whose plans shift with the weather and the harvest
  • Outdoor brands and retail in Ventura that run frequent brainstorms
  • Hospitality and tourism along the coast, where front-of-house leaders are rarely free at the same time
  • Small local offices that are part of a bigger team in other states, so a Zoom game puts everyone on the same screen

We host teams across Santa Barbara, Goleta, Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Carpinteria, Montecito, Westlake Village, and Simi Valley.

Four Ways a Team Game Falls Flat

  1. Skipping the warm-up: quieter people freeze if you jump to the building round. Run Round 1 first.
  2. Rounds that run long: stop each game while people still want more.
  3. Praising one person: it makes everyone else feel graded. Praise the group.
  4. Over-explaining: a ten-second demo beats a two-minute explanation.

What the Hosted Hour Adds

The plan above is a solid DIY hour. The hosted game takes the planning and the hosting off your plate. I run the whole session, from the Vocal Warm-Up through Whoosh, Bang, Pow and Slow Motion Fast Ball to the celebration wrap. Before the event I check in to learn about your team and any topics to avoid.

As Efrat put it after her team’s event:

“Great for team events. We had a great time, filled with laughter. Everyone felt included.”
