Before You Start

A few rules apply to every game below. Keep chat open, know your headcount, and always demo the game yourself for five seconds before asking people to jump in. That one demo cuts confusion by more than half.

Under 60 Seconds

1. Desk Item Show and Tell (30 seconds) Ask everyone to grab the weirdest object within arm’s reach, no getting up. On your count of three, everyone holds it up to camera at once. Go around gallery view and have three or four people explain theirs in one sentence.

2. One Word Check-In (30 seconds) Go around the group, or use chat for large groups, and have each person type or say one word that describes their week. No explanations allowed. The single-word rule is what makes it fast and honest.

3. Virtual High Five (30 seconds) Everyone unmutes. In gallery view, each person waves at camera and says the name of the person in the square to their right, then that person does the same to the next. It moves in a chain around the whole call.

4. Caption This (45 seconds) Screen-share a weird stock photo or a photo of your own pet in a costume. Everyone types a caption in chat. Host reads the three funniest out loud.

One To Three Minutes

5. Two Truths and a Lie: Job Edition (2 minutes) Same classic format, but one statement must relate to their current job or a past one. It forces more interesting truths than the usual skydiving-trip answer everyone has heard a hundred times.

6. Would You Rather: Office Edition (2 minutes) Host asks three rapid-fire would-you-rather questions built around office life, like unlimited PTO but no remote work versus unlimited remote work but no PTO. Everyone answers in chat at the same time on the count of three, host reads out the split.

7. Show Us Your Background (2 minutes) Ask three or four volunteers to explain the real story behind whatever is visible behind them, actual background, not a virtual one. It’s a fast way to surface real personal details without asking anyone to overshare on purpose.

8. The Human Emoji (90 seconds) Host says an emotion, like surprised, confused, or victorious. Everyone has five seconds to act it out with just their face and hands, freeze, then unfreeze on the host’s cue. No talking allowed, which is exactly what makes it funny.

9. Speed Compliment Round (2 minutes) Randomly pair people using breakout rooms for 90 seconds. Each pair gives the other one specific, genuine compliment about their work, not their appearance. Bring everyone back and ask two or three pairs to share what they got.

Three To Five Minutes

10. Collaborative Story Chain (4 minutes) Host gives an opening line, something like: the office printer had been possessed for exactly three days when. Going around the group, each person adds one sentence, unmuting in turn. No planning ahead allowed. The wilder the group gets, the better it works.

11. Guess the Coworker (5 minutes) Before the call, collect one odd true fact from each participant anonymously, a quick form works fine. During the meeting, the host reads facts one at a time and the group guesses who it belongs to in chat before the answer is revealed.

12. Energy Pass (3 minutes) An improv warm-up: the host passes an imaginary object to one person in gallery view with a sound and gesture, that person catches it, changes the sound and gesture, and passes it to someone else. It sounds strange written down and works remarkably well once people commit to it.

How To Pick The Right One

Use the 60-second games to open any meeting, not just a dedicated team building session. Save the three to five minute games for when you’ve actually blocked time for connection. There’s a separate list of 5-minute team building activities built for that slot, and a list of icebreaker questions for work for the days you want a question instead of a game. And if you want a full 45 to 60 minutes of this energy without having to host it yourself, that’s the exact format behind the Virtual Office Shenanigans Game: a live host running a full session of interactive games like these, built for groups of 10 to 50.

The biggest mistake is picking a five-minute game to fill a two-minute gap before a meeting starts. Match the game to the time you actually have, not the time you wish you had.
